MICHAEL JACKSON THE IMMORTAL WORLD TOUR RECEIVES CREATIVE CONTENT AWARD AT THE BILLBOARD TOURING AWARDS

Billboard Magazine presented its annual Touring Awards during the evening of November 8, 2012 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. The event included the special Creative Content Award for Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour. The award was accepted by John Branca, co-Exeuctor of the Estate of Michael Jackson, and Chantal Trembley, Creative Director at Cirque du Soleil. Also attending the awards were members of the Estate and Cirque teams and a couple of the designers for the show – Zaldy Goco (costumes) and Travis Payne (one of the show’s choreographers)

Is this the big revelation of the new Michael Jackson? I didnt find anything new.

Cirque du Soleil plots Michael Jackson show post-‘Zarkana,’ ‘Immortal’ success

Reveling in the success of the Michael Jackson touring show “Immortal,” Cirque du Soleil President Daniel Lamarre has revealed details of the full-time-residency King of Pop production set to open at Mandalay Bay in May.

Daniel told me: “We are talking May 23 for the first-night of previews, with the grand gala opening June 21. The Montreal studio right now is moving and shaking with Michael Jackson rehearsals. It will be totally different from the touring show.

“The tour was a rock arena concert, but this will be highly theatrical. That’s the big difference, but there will still not be a Michael Jackson character in it.”

Cirque has still not decided on the show’s title, and the creative team is working on the visuals. Daniel explained: “For the moment, we want to keep all the lights focused on our new ‘Zarkana’ at CityCenter. Once it’s well established, which will take a couple of months, we’ll come back to you and start really talking about the new Michael Jackson show.

“However, I don’t want to confuse the two Michael shows. They are totally different. We have already learned from the touring show that people want to listen and see his complete hits. They don’t want a medley of songs; they want the full song.

“So it won’t be 23 songs in the theatrical version. We will probably have fewer, but we will play it full blast. None of the acts in the touring show will be used in the theatrical show. They will all be brand new -- nothing will have been seen before.

“There will be a lot of acrobatic acts, but they will be characters with the storytelling. It will be very different than anything else we have done.”

Daniel told me that costumes and makeup are being finalized in the next two weeks: “We are a collaboratory! We are right in the middle of it. We keep trying new things and new challenges. Everything is very much on target with the construction at the theater in Mandalay Bay.

“You will be surprised with the changes there. … It is part of our signature. We love to change theaters in order to present our content the best way. … We will move the cast and crew to Las Vegas in March.”

I asked Daniel if it would be a re-creation of Neverland the audience would walk through. “We like the Neverland signature. You will see something of Neverland, but I don’t want to take you in the wrong direction,” he explained. “There is some Neverland, but it is not about Neverland. We have our own story line compared to other Cirque shows.

“It is an amazing combination of director Jamie King, who worked on the touring show, and a young man, Welby Altidor, who is the creative director. He has been with Cirque a long time -- he has grown with Cirque. He is really bringing something different to the signature of the show. “

Daniel told me that once the production is together and installed in Las Vegas, Cirque founder Guy Laliberte will then be here to finish the production and give the green-light go.

Meantime, “Immortal” continues to break records and win awards. “We won the most creative arena show in North America award from Billboard on Thursday, the night before ‘Zarkana’ opened. We are sold out everywhere in Europe right now. We set new all-time-record attendance records in Denmark. It’s the same wherever the show goes in. Last week, we were in Sweden and phenomenal records.

“It’s so big we are extending the tour by at least another year. It means for now, we will run it until the end of 2014 for sure. It’s headed for South America and Asia. Then we’ll return it to America and Europe to a lot of repeat cities where we were very successful and could have had longer engagements.”

I talked with Daniel at Gold Lounge in Aria before the “Zarkana” premiere Friday night. He summed up: “This is a very exciting night. It also is very interesting for us because it is the first time in Las Vegas that we opened an existing show, but all the excitement of a brand new show is here.

“The sound is a huge change from New York. It is much bolder here. The one thing that we had underestimated is how well the music, the set, fits in the Aria theater. This is pure luck because it was not planned that way.

“When I walked in the theater with Guy 10 days ago, he was overwhelmed. That is rare because Guy is very, very severe about the content of our shows, but when he felt, heard and saw the ultra-sound and everything else, he was really, really pleased.”

Yesterday I watched the Immortal tour documentary on TV. It is the same of the video that I posted in this thread, but the video is not available anymore. Also the one I watched was in English.

I will watched again on Dec 26, but some points I noticed:

First a nasty comment. Jermaine said in recent interview that Immortal tour was not approved for the family, however, Tito, Marlon and Jackie were part of the documentary and they say otherwise. It seems Jermaine thinks the "family" is HIM..

Interesing to see the lady (I don't remember the name) from MJ Estate talking in present tense.

During Billie Jean performance, Michael's voice comes saying something that is not in the Immortal album or the original song. "I can make, you can do it", during the chorous Billie Jean... I don't know for sure. I will try to pay more attention next time.

Hehehe.. I also saw a singer with fedora hat and a mask.. hehehe

I found part of the documentary. The part about Billie Jean:

At 3:40 Michael says something like "You know you can" or "you know you cant'"> What do you think?

In the original Billie Jean there is not this part.

Thanks Gail, my English is not that good. I thought I was hearing too much. Did he sing like that in any show? I don't remember. It sounds like it was added on purpose.

I am watching it again on TV right now and I notice something else. It will play again on 28.. hehehe. I have one more change to catch on something else.

The designer for TII was talking about the "death" and he said he was asked to make the casket lining, he said his team made it all from zarovsky crystals and elements from the outfits for the show. This does not match with what was said by the coroners neither from LaToya's book (not sure about LaToya's).

Wicked Whispers & Racy Rumors!

Exclusive news about the new Michael Jackson residency show headed to Mandalay Bay this spring. It will not have a title -- just a number. Cirque du Soleil officials are tight-lipped about the numeral they’ve chosen, so the guessing game begins.

I also have learned that the Montreal cast and crew move here to begin rehearsals on the nearly completed stage at Mandalay as of Feb. 18. One spywitness who saw the acts rehearsing in Montreal said the acrobats are the world’s best and exceed any other performed to date in any Cirque show.

Directed by Jamie King, Michael Jackson ONE will start its preview performances on May 23, 2013 and have its official premiere on June 29, 2013. The show

Michael Jackson ONE is a state-of-the-art visual and audio experience creating a theatrical evocation of Michael's creative genius. Guided and inspired by his music, four misfits set out on a transformative adventure. By journey's end, they will personify Michael's agility, courage, playfulness and love.

The name

Michael Jackson believed that all people are unique and equal, regardless of race or culture. His message was one of unity, harmony and hope for a better world. At once evocative and enigmatic, the name Michael Jackson ONE also presents a paradox: Michael was a multifaceted artist who strove to fuse together various musical styles and art forms. It is a fitting title for a unifying journey into the world of the King of Pop, the genius, the visionary, the One.

"This is our second project with The Estate of Michael Jackson which confirms how stimulating this creative partnership was meant to be," said Daniel Lamarre, president and CEO of Cirque du Soleil. "Michael Jackson is an all-time phenomenal artist, both timeless and contemporary. As a creative challenge, this project is the ultimate. Through the use of cutting edge technology, we will produce a new Cirque du Soleil theatrical experience not only respectful of Michael's legacy but also very distinctive from Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour."

"We are guided by Michael's own philosophy in all that we do. In preparing for this production, Michael's message to the cast and crew for his This Is It concerts was foremost in our minds. He counseled them on what the audience experience should be: 'They want wonderful experiences. We want to take them places that they've never been before. We want to show them talent like they've never seen before. We're putting love back into the world to remind the world that love is important. WE'RE ALL ONE. That is the message. ' We feel the same, and that is what we are delivering both to lifelong fans and those just discovering his artistic genius with Michael Jackson ONE," stated John Branca and John McClain, Co-Executors of The Estate of Michael Jackson.

Chuck Bowling, Mandalay Bay's president and COO, said, "The partnership with Cirque du Soleil and The Estate of Michael Jackson represents an extraordinary moment for Mandalay Bay. We are in the midst of a major transformation at this resort, introducing a new set of experiences for our guests. Michael Jackson ONE is truly the crown jewel in that transformation and we cannot wait to share this very special production with the world."

Along with Jamie King—who started his career as a dancer on Michael's Dangerous World Tour and also directed the arena touring show Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour by Cirque du Soleil—, Michael Jackson ONE will bring together the creative minds behind The Michael Jackson Estate, John Branca and John McClain, and the diverse talents of the following creators:

Cirque tells more about new Michael Jackson Vegas show

Cirque du Soleil's second partnership with the estate of Michael Jackson aims to be a thriller.

The 90-minute show will feature five dozen cast members, from dancers to acrobats (no one will portray Jackson), and offer "a very close encounter with the music of Michael Jackson" and with the late pop icon's artistic vision, Altidor, "director of creation" for ONE, says.

Unlike Cirque's current touring arena Jackson show, IMMORTAL, the Mandalay Bay production will be more intimate and interactive, Altidor says. "It's another story about Michael's genius," focusing on his No. 1 hits. "There will be experiences above (the audience), on the side and in the front."

Cirque had what Altidor calls "unprecedented access" to Jackson's master recordings and will use them. "At times it will feel like being in the studio with Michael," he says. Tickets go on sale March 7 at cirquedusoleil.com.

Michael Jackson's New Vegas Show 'One' Will Double The Fun

Michael Jackson pulled in an estimated $145 million last year from beyond the grave–tens of millions more than any living musician. A big part of that: his Immortal World Tour, a joint venture between the Michael Jackson Estate and Cirque du Soleil. It grossed $160 million in its first leg, tops among North American tours in 2012.

On the heels of that success, Jackson’s estate and Cirque du Soliel have announced another endeavor: Michael Jackson One, a brand-new show set to run indefinitely at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, set to debut in preview form on May 23rd, 2013. The official premiere will follow on June 29th, 2013.

“Michael Jackson is an all-time phenomenal artist, both timeless and contemporary,” said Cirque chief Daniel Lamarre in a statement. “As a creative challenge, this project is the ultimate. Through the use of cutting edge technology, we will produce a new Cirque du Soleil theatrical experience not only respectful of Michael’s legacy but also very distinctive from Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour.”

The new show means that Michael Jackson will soon be able to do something that no artist has ever done before: play two arena shows at the same time. Even as fans gather for the first performance of One in Vegas on May 23rd, the same thing will be happening on the other side of the world as the Immortal World Tour rolls into Nagoya, Japan. Just hours after the official Vegas premier the following month, Immortal will take the stage in Taipei, Taiwan.

Directed by Jamie King, the plot of Michael Jackson One will follow four misfits as they embark upon a musical, visual, theatrical adventure. The title of the show reflects its inspiration and recurring theme–unity and peace–the sort of themes Jackson explored in songs like “Man In The Mirror” and “Heal The World.”

Said estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain in a statement:

We are guided by Michael’s own philosophy in all that we do. In preparing for this production, Michael’s message to the cast and crew for his This Is It concerts was foremost in our minds. He counseled them on what the audience experience should be: ‘They want wonderful experiences. We want to take them places that they’ve never been before. We want to show them talent like they’ve never seen before. We’re putting love back into the world to remind the world that love is important. WE’RE ALL ONE. That is the message.’ We feel the same, and that is what we are delivering both to lifelong fans and those just discovering his artistic genius with Michael Jackson One.”

In addition to being a brilliant entertainer–taking millions places they hadn’t been through music and videos alike–Jackson was also quite a savvy businessman in his day (a theme I’m exploring in my upcoming book, Michael Jackson, Inc., due out next year for Simon & Schuster).

He outmaneuvered billionaires and music executives to acquire ATV, the company that owned the Beatles’ publishing catalog, for $47.5 million in 1985. That investment is now worth somewhere around $1 billion.

It seems Jackson the musician would have enjoyed the notion of his songs reaching potentially twice as many people through two Cirque du Soleil shows–and it’s likely that Jackson the businessman would have been quite pleased by the financial implications as well.

Go Michael, Go Michael Go Michael....

Cirque's Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour Tops Hot Tours

Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour, Cirque du Soleil's touring production that has been playing arenas in North America and Europe since October 2011, owns the No. 1 ranking on this week's Hot Tours tally with grosses reported from venues in Russia and Switzerland. The theatrical concert production that features the music of the late King of Pop began its European leg last fall following a yearlong trek through North American markets.

The tour has appeared in three Russian cities since the launch of the European trek on October 12. The first engagement was in Saint Petersburg in November with four performances at the Ice Palace, the city's 12,000-seat ice hockey arena. The Immortal Tour spent the rest of 2012 on the road in Germany, Austria and Spain but returned to Russia at the beginning of this year with three performances in the city of Kazan. A run of six shows followed in Moscow at the Olimpiyskiy, an arena built for the 1980 Summer Olympics. The Moscow shows generated more than $9.9 million in ticket revenue from over 76,000 sold seats.

The Swiss venue that hosted Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson tour was Zürich's Hallenstadion with $2.8 million in revenue from a three-night run of shows. The Immortal tour played at the arena on Feb. 13-15 with attendance from all three performances surpassing 20,000.

The Jonas Brothers land at No. 3 on Hot Tours with totals reported from the first three venues on the Latin American portion of the pop trio's world tour that kicked off last October in New York City. Two Mexican cities are on the group's 2013 tour itinerary, and concert promoter OCESA reported gross and attendance totals from both markets this week. More than 18,000 tickets were sold for shows in Monterrey (Feb. 20) and Mexico City (Feb. 22) totaling $1.2 million in gross revenue. The first date on the South American leg of the tour was also reported to Billboard this week. Concert promoter Evenpro/Water Brother reported totals from a performance in Caracas, Venezuela at Simón Bolívar University on Feb. 24.

Some of the cast in Michael Jackson ONE are called MJ Warriors

Here they are at work. Can you guess which of Michael’s outfits inspired this costume?

A sneak peek at Michael Jackson ONE

Cirque du Soleil prides itself on making each new show bigger and badder than the last. And for this second combination of the spectacle of Cirque du Soleil with the musical genius of Michael Jackson, this one is bad all right (which of course means that it's really really badass). The first show, the top-grossing Michael Jackson – The Immortal World Tour is currently touring Europe. In Las Vegas, four new acts of Michael Jackson ONEwere previewed to the media as a sneak peek of the new King of Pop-driven show at Mandalay Bay.

Michael Jackson ONE writer and director Jamie King and director of creation Welby Altidor spoke briefly to the show's first "real" audience about their excitement leading up to the show, before preview performances begin May 23. King and Altidor chose four scenes they felt showcase the energy of the new show, which features more than 60 performers in a theater that has a sound system worthy of Jackson's iconic music.

Where Cirque du Soleil would normally have clowns before the show, Michael Jackson ONE features black fedora and red trench coat-clad paparazzi roaming the aisles, getting in the faces of audience members. This is a nod to the struggle the star had with the media hounding him, and just one of the instances where art imitates Jackson's life. The paparazzi don't leave quietly – they make an appearance in Tabloid Junkie, an act that's an assault on the senses, and highlights some of the crazier rumors about Jackson, including buying the bones of the Elephant Man and sleeping in an oxygen tank.

Michael Jackson's trademark choreography fits seamlessly with classic Cirque du Soleil acrobatics. "With Cirque," says King, "I can express and experience his music in a new way. There are a lot of iconic moments that are put on with a Cirque twist." Indeed, a lot of the movement in the show, according to Altidor and King, was defined by asking "If Michael was an acrobat, how would he move?"

The ballad Stranger in Moscow showcases a beautiful and strong solitary rope acrobat personifying the theme of isolation. That song was written in response to allegations and pressures in Jackson's career.

Smooth Criminal is a study in light and dark, and a testament to the innovative costume design by Zaldy Goco. The performers' seemingly black and white pinstripe suits glow neon dragons under black lights. In this choreography-heavy number, the dancers even nail the song's signature gravity-defying 45-degree lean.

And yes, there was a sneak peek of Bad itself, with a team of acrobats bouncing on lines of thin tape as if they were trampolines. But this is also where we get our first Moonwalk, courtesy of a couple of magical shoes that float from the sky and bust out the classic move as soon as they hit the stage.

Michael Jackson ONE is already full of magic, music and love, three things that defined its namesake. Prepare to be dazzled when the show officially opens June 29. For ticket information, visit cirquedusoleil.com/mjone or mandalaybay.com.

They did it. They created Michael's hologram but different from Tupak Michael's hologram dances with the dancers

Michael Jackson's Hologram Rocks Las Vegas Arena

It only seems fitting that Michael Jackson, the man who brought the world “Thriller,” was resurrected on a Las Vegas stage late Thursday night—in the form of a hologram.

The moment occurred toward the end of the first public performance of Michael Jackson ONE, a joint venture between Cirque du Soleil and Jackson’s estate. The singer’s apparition materialized from a cloud of gold pixie dust and proceeded to deliver a rousing rendition of “Man In The Mirror.”

Throughout the song, Jackson’s hologram stomps around the stage as a coterie of backup dancers swirl around him, moving in unison like a school of fish with one illusory leader. The phantom Jackson even executes a move that involves dropping to one knee and getting back up; he’s briefly transformed into a Jackson 5 era version of himself before evaporating at the song’s end.

When Jackson first appeared onstage, you could feel a swell of energy ripple through the sellout crowd at Mandalay Bay. It wasn’t accompanied by the volume level of some of the show’s other big moments, almost as if the audience was holding its collective breath to keep from shattering the fleeting sliver of hope that this was not an illusion, but the King of Pop himself.

That’s the same sort of reaction that Tupac Shakur’s hologram received when it debuted at Coachella last year. Indeed, similar technology was used for both (technically, they’re illusions, not holograms). But Jackson’s actually danced and overlapped with cohorts onstage; Shakur’s merely rapped in the direction of Snoop Dogg, who was standing ten feet away.

Much was made of Shakur’s spectral return and the possibility of a hologram tour, yet nothing of the sort has progressed beyond rumor. Shortly after Jeff Jampol (who serves as a consultant to the Jackson estate) took over management of Shakur’s estate, he downplayed the likelihood of a solo tour for the rapper.

The illusory Jackson, on the other hand, is just one cog in a vast postmortem performance machine. The Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour grossed $160 million in it its initial leg, tops among all North American tours last year.

The new Vegas-based show will be hard-pressed to match Immortal’s results, given that it’s based in a 1,800-seat venue, while the latter fills up basketball arenas.

But if last night was any indication, ONE is headed in the right direction: according to sources close to the matter, all performances are sold out through the end of May at an average ticket price of about $125.

The King of Pop pulled in $145 million in 2012—and now with two Cirque du Soleil shows and a hologram, this year’s number should stay in the stratosphere.

Michael Jackson Returns To The Stage In Vegas--As A Hologram

Michael Jackson One’ is Cirque’s best — and includes snow at Mandalay

Die-hard Michael Jackson fans flew in from as far away as Thailand and Japan to attend Thursday night’s first preview performance of Cirque du Soleil’s new “Michael Jackson One” at Mandalay Bay. Tickets, hotel and airfare cost a small fortune, but like me — and I purchased my tickets — they agreed that it was worth every penny, and then some.

The routine using rare, lengthy footage of Michael dancing as a hologram for the Cirque troupe is modern technology at its most brilliant. It’s emotional because it’s so magically real. Michael has become the star of the show he would’ve been thrilled to have watched or taken part. So much so that Michael’s image and creative genius were still alive last night.

“Michael Jackson One” is a fabulous and incredible spectacular from start to finish. This was a preview; imagine how Cirque and writer-director Jamie King can make it even bigger or better for the June 29 premiere. We posted a preview of the show Thursday with links to my interviews with “One’s” creative team leading up to last night’s performance.

“One” is such a riveting and immersive experience, you’ll want to return time and again to catch what you miss. The nonstop action is throughout the theater, up in the ceiling and in the aisles alongside the audience, as well as on the stage and sidewalls.

The dancing is beyond superb. The multi-colored costumes and illuminated wardrobe creations are beyond dazzling. The music compilation of Michael’s No. 1 hits is a seamless audio montage beyond anything experienced before. The video imagery is beyond perfection. Without a shadow of doubt, this is Cirque’s best spectacular in its nearly 30-year history. The pyrotechnics and fireworks onstage add to the explosive show.
